Age-Related Macular Degeneration

The macula is the central part of the retina (back of the eye). It is responsible for your clear central vision that is used when reading, driving and distinguishing colours.

Age-related Macular degeneration (AMD) causes progressive damage to the macula region and can result is loss of central vison while the peripheral vision remains intact.

AMD is the leading cause of blindness in Australia, with 1 in 7 Australians over the age of 50 having some evidence of the disease.

Current treatments aim to preserve vision for as long as possible but there is currently no cure for AMD. Early detection is vital to save sight as it can allow you to make necessary changes to slow the progression.

Our macular degeneration package includes a comprehensive eye examdilated pupil examinationvisual field testOCT scan of the macula. Our Optometrists will provide advice on diet, nutrition, lifestyle, supplements and self-monitoring tools.
